On June 4, 2012 The Springfield, Massachusetts Police Department suffered a great loss when Officer Kevin Ambrose, a 36 year veteran of the Springfield Police Department, was tragically shot and killed in the line of duty while attempting to defend a woman and her child during a domestic altercation. The incident was heartfelt around the community as Officer Ambrose was a popular officer and pillar in the community who coached various youth athletic teams. Since the death of Officer Ambrose, a memorial fund was established to keep Officer Ambrose’s name alive by providing local youths with scholarship opportunities as well as provide private donations that benefit the community that Officer Ambrose loved so much.
In 2012, a yearly boxing event was established in Officer Ambrose’s name with all of the proceeds to benefit local charities in the name of Officer Kevin Ambrose. Like previous year’s events, which were a great success raising more than $30,000.00 for charity, this year’s event is a semi-formal affair which will be held at the Log Cabin Inn and Banquet House located in Holyoke, Massachusetts on Friday, November 20, 2015. The doors open at 5:00 pm with a cocktail hour and hord’oeuvers. At 6:00 pm all guests will be served a sirloin steak dinner. At 7:15 pm the announcements will begin followed by the National Anthem and bag pipe tribute to Fallen Officers. The event will include a silent auction involving sports memorabilia as well as an autograph session involving a local sports celebrity. The event which is being hosted by the Massachusetts State Police Boxing Team and Central City Boxing and Barbell of Springfield has approximately 10 scheduled bouts involving boxers from throughout New England.
This event is being held solely based on donations from the community with the proceeds going directly to charity. This year's proceeds will benefit Central City Boxing & Barbell Inc. which is Springfield's newest 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Central City Boxing & Barbell's mission is to create opportunities for our at-risk youth though structured programs that are character based placing an emphasis on education. Central City Boxing & Barbell is dedicated to implementing after-school and summer program(s) with high school age students to use boxing and weight training as the vehicle to create structure by initiating goal oriented sports training to young people, and to ultimately inspire these youth to become part of a team developing strong individuals including physical, mental and emotional development.
Your support of this event would be greatly appreciated and will assist in maintaining that Officer Ambrose’s name and legacy stays alive.
